Ferrets have two canine fangs that protrude down from the upper jaw, outside their lower lip.  He would come over and put the tip of his little snout on my foot and press down gently until the fang poked my foot and let me know he was there!  He is the only ferret of my group that did that, so it made it easy to identify him without even looking!

Smokey also allowed himself to be held and cuddled.  He didn't particularly come up and ask for that treatment, but if I saw him and picked him up, he would lay there, peacefully, until I decided to put him back down.  Not many ferrets will tolerate that!  He was also very furry, so petting him was a pleasure.

Smokey was a very large ferret, as ferrets go.  He is even larger than Fuzzer, who is as big as some small dogs that I've seen!  One of the disadvantages of this, was that he couldn't go some of the places that my other ferrets can get to.  For instance, I have a play tube for the ferrets (it is actually a cardboard mailing tube that some posters came in) to play in.  The tube is inserted into the top of a plastic kid's castle and the castle is laid on its back on the floor.  This way, the ferrets can all run through the tube and pop out inside the castle--or the other way around, too!

Smokey just couldn't fit into the tube, no matter how much he wanted to.  So, his trick was to chase a ferret into the tube, then rush over to the castle end and jump in through the much-larger entrance and wait for the ferret to come out the other side!

Ziggy knew that it was a good place to get away from Smokey, too.  Ziggy would go into the tube about halfway, then just sit there, while Smokey waited at the far end.  Smokey would start tugging at the end of the tube, then would go outside the castle and jump on it in several places, trying to convince Ziggy to come out of there!

I also have two triangular mailing cartons that they ferrets play in.  If Ziggy tried to escape into one of those, Smokey would actually tip them over and roll Ziggy around inside!  Since he was the only ferret that couldn't get inside one of the tubes, none of the other ferrets bothered to learn this trick.

Being large also presented other challenges for Smokey.  For instance, if I was sitting on the couch watching television, he had a very hard time climbing up to get my attention.  The other ferrets can mostly just jump up on the couch.  Occasionally, Fuzzer has a bit of a problem, but with sheer strength, he will eventually make it up there.  Smokey wasn't quite as athletic as Fuzzer, though, and would have to really work at it to get up there!

Smokey also liked to follow me around from time to time.  If all of the other ferrets were asleep during play time, he would seek me out and follow me around.  I would roll him over and wrestle with him, or pet him, or pick him up and carry him around as I went about my business.  He enjoyed the attention and I enjoyed the fact that I was worth
